Main Gate
Front right side(Agyo)
Front left side(Ungyo)
Built in the latter Edo Period between the mid-18th to mid-19th century, the main gate is called Nio Mon. Major repairs to the gate are performed approximately every 100 years, the most recent completed in December 2018.
The statues of Nio(Kongo Rikishi)that flank the main gate are said to be fashioned in a style that was popular in the late Edo Period.
Before entering, stand squarely before the gate with palms pressed together in silent prayer. The approach to the temple is considered to be the Buddha's path. Please remove your hat and walk along either side of the path.
