On the day of Setsubun, roasted soybeans are thrown to ward off evil and bring good fortune. In their homes, Japanese families have engaged in this tradition since ancient times.
At Nishiarai Daishi, beans are thrown as a prayer for a year free of illness and calamity.
Approximately 300 men and women who share the current year's Chinese Zodiac sign are joined by sumo wrestlers from the Miyagino and Tamanoi Stables along with celebrities to throw the beans.
Taking home the tossed beans and eating the same number as your age is believed to ward off evil and fortify the body.
Note:The grounds will be extremely crowded at Setsubun. Allow plenty of time to arrive and depart.
